“On September 13. The exact day of the battle, when more than one thousand men had died and been wounded in an hour. Gamache had stood there and believed he heard the shouts, heard the shots, smelled the gunpowder, seen the men charging.”
This 2-hour walking tour takes us onto the renowned Plains of Abraham, following the footsteps and pawprints of Inspector Gamache and his faithful (but slightly dim) canine companion Henri during their walks in the Louise Penny novel Bury Your Dead. The sites we visit include the Heights of Abraham, where a momentous battle took place that would shape the course of Canadian history; the monuments to French General Montcalm and British General Wolfe, who both lost their lives in the conflict; and the place where Gamache and Hancock have their revealing final encounter. Even for people who haven’t read Bury Your Dead, this tour offers a geographical, historical and botanical exploration of an urban park steeped in cultural and military significance which is also the green heart of Québec City today.
